| This carpet ball or carpet bowl is over 100 years old, dating to 1870-1890s and is of original glazed hard fired clay. The design is an interesting one of white and pink or red plaid. Plaid was a favorite of Queen Victoria. The carpet ball is about 3.5 inches in diameter. It is quite heavy. The condition is very good. It has been used, and has a superficial flaw that looks to have been a manufacturing flaw. There are the usual tiny circle dents where the ball has been hit hard. Carpet balls were developed during the reign of Queen Victoria who reigned from 1832-1901, as a form of outdoor bowls to be played in the parlor. Original balls are very hard to find. These took me over a year. Currently they are valued not only as victoriana but as a decorative accent. Shipping in the US by USPS priority insured. |
