This is an English antique victorian glazed earthenware jar or crock that was made in the 1860-1880s.

The meat paste crock measures 1.5 inches high 3.65 inches in diameter and has the black transferware words Springfield Home Potted Meats, Horrocks & Watson, Southport.

The potted meat jar or crock was sealed originally with a layer of congealed fat on the top as a protection for the meat paste and were the Victorian answer to take out fast food.

The meat crock is in very good condition as these go with only 3 very small top rim chips, one very small base rim chip and an area of discoloration top and bottom which happens to these as they contained items with fat in them.

Truly a fun piece of victoriana, a great item of advertising and domestic history and neat decorative piece as well as very hard to find anymore.
