This motto ware or mottoware pitcher or jug was made by the Dartmouth Pottery of Devon, England and bears the following motto: Too Many Cooks Spoil The Broth and the traditional cottage.

The mottoware jug, which is actually a creamy pale yellow color, measures 3 inches high by 5 inches long by 3.5 inches in diameter.

This Torquay motto pitcher, creamer or jug was made in the 1940-1950s.

The mottoware cream pitcher is in very good ++ used vintage condition with no chips or cracks, but there are 2 manufacturing flaws. First the spout exterior lip was chipped during manufacture and glazed over, and secondly the top of the handle was roughly put on so there is a firing crack under glaze around the top and a bit of an extra glob of clay under the glaze at the side of the handle.

This famous and fun pottery has been manufactured in the south of England from the 1870s until the factories closed in the 1960s.

It is usually of red clay decorated with bright glazes, cottages and mottos or sayings that run the gamut from proverbs and sound advice to nearly outrageous. Always fun and different and very collectible!
