Brass Wax Seal Stamp Scottish Thistle 1920s JW England Initial M or W
SKU: 7337-115
This is antique English brass wax stamp or letter seal with a thistle finial for sealing letters or invitations.
The gold plated metal seal measures 4 inches long and was made by J W and Co, Ltd. and is marked British rather than Made In England, and dates to 1900-1920.
The stamp measures 3.65 inches high and is .65 of an inch in diameter with the base plate being .75 of an inch in diameter.
The initial plate, which is a Gothic letter M or could be a W, and unscrews from the base.
This brass wax seal or stamp is beautifully made and detailed with the Scottish thistle design.
In the 1960s-1970s I sealed all my correspondence this way, but just refound a small box of seals and sealing wax. I was able to melt enough after many trials to give an example, but most of the wax sticks would not light, would not melt or burst into flame, so I have discarded them all. But… sealing wax sticks are still readily available.
The wax seal is in very good +++ used vintage condition but does show some wear on the fancy thistle leaf design on the handle from use, and antique patina.
Original patina. I have not polished it up.
