Teapot Mottoware Watcombe Duee Av Zum Tay Motto Ware 1890s Victorian Scandy
This is a teapot made by Watcombe Torquay, Devon England in mottoware or motto ware pottery.
The motto or saying is Duee Av Zum Tay with the traditional flower design called a Scandy and it was made 1890-1900 and is unmarked as many Watcombe pieces were during that time.
The teapot measures 4 inches high by 5 inches in diameter and is in very good +++ used vintage condition with no chips or cracks, but there are places where the paint was smeared underglaze during manufacture and general age consistent crazing.
The photo of the front also has a glare from the lights on the glazed surface which made it difficult to photo well.
A cute item of mottoware from our last England trip with a great hospitable motto.
Famous and fun motto ware or mottoware has been manufactured in the south of England from the 1860s until the factories closed in the 1960s.
It is usually of red clay decorated with bright glazes, cottages and mottos or sayings that run the gamut from proverbs and sound advice to nearly outrageous. Always fun and different and very collectible!
